Michael Nyman – The Piano

The Piano is a 1993 drama film about a mute pianist and her daughter, set during the mid-19th century in a rainy, muddy frontier backwater on the west coast of New Zealand. The film was written and directed by Jane Campion, and stars Holly Hunter, Harvey Keitel, Sam Neill, and Anna Paquin. It features a score for the piano by Michael Nyman which became a bestselling soundtrack album. Hunter played her own piano pieces for the film, and also served as sign language teacher for Paquin, earning three screen credits. The film was an international co-production by Australian producer Jan Chapman with the French company Ciby 2000.

The Piano was a commercial and critical success, grossing more than $40 million, against its $7 million budget. Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin received high praise for their roles as Ada McGrath and Flora McGrath. At the 66th Academy Awards, The Piano won three awards: Best Actress for Hunter, Best Supporting Actress for Paquin, and Best Original Screenplay. Paquin, who at the time was 11 years old, is the second youngest Oscar winner ever, after Tatum O’Neal, who also won the Supporting Actress award in 1974 for Paper Moon, at 10.

Celebrity Voice-Over Impersonations: Be Cautious! Words to the Wise …

Have you been asked to impersonate a celebrity voice? Do so only with great caution!

Celebrities and their estates quite understandably want to protect the use of and income from their recognized voices. And this can land a voice impersonator in legal hot water.

Let my experiences, research and opinions be a guide for you. Of course, legal counsel is your best course when deciding what to do.

BETTE, MICKEY & JOAN

Cases in point:

A while ago, entertainer Bette Midler won a lawsuit when her voice was impersonated by a voice-over talent on a national commercial. I believe the person sang as well as spoke in that commercial, but I am not certain.

The Disney organization is known as one that is particularly alert to infringements of copyrights. Continue reading →

The Music of Inception- The Making of the Inception Soundtrack

Azam Ali: "A glorious unforgettable instrument".

By: By Sanaz Ebriani.

In a career which spans over a decade and includes eight collaborative albums and solo albums, Azam Ali has confirmed her place as one of the most prolific, versatile, and gifted singers on the world music stage today. Her dedication to defying cultural specificity in music, and her unwillingness to settle into one form of musical expression have earned her the respect of both her peers and critics worldwide. When one looks at her entire body of work, it is hard to deny Azam her rightful place among the best singers and composers in music today.

Azam Ali, was born in Tehran, Iran and grew up in India from the age of four in the small town ofPanchgani, a beautiful hill station in the state of Maharashtra. There she attended an international co-educational boarding school for eleven years, all the while absorbing India’s rich music and culture throughout her formative years. The course Azam would eventually choose in her life would be very much influenced by her fortuitous upbringing in a school that emphasized the importance of the arts and spirituality, and aimed through moral and academic excellence, to produce promoters of social transformation imbued with the spirit of service to humanity. It is this objective that would take shape in Azam’s music in the coming years.

'Please Don’t Swallow The Mic!' Rants From An Audio Engineer …

OK voice actors. I’ve got a bone to pick.

I regularly run into actors who don’t know what they’re doing in front of the microphone. Actually, to be fair, they often know what it is they’re doing, but they rarely know why they do it.

A prime example of this is the proximity effect.

Loosely put, this states that the closer you get to a directional microphone, the more pronounced low frequency sound will become. Continue reading →

Lord of the Rings – Howard Shore

The music of the The Lord of the Rings film trilogy was composed, orchestrated, conducted and produced by Howard Shore. Shore wrote many hours of music for The Lord of the Rings, 10 hours of which have been released in The Complete Recordings CD/DVD boxed sets. Additional music, including alternate and unused compositions, was released with the book The Music of the Lord of the Rings films in 2010. Shore composed the music in an emotional, operatic way, threading through the scores over 90 identified leitmotifs, which are categorized by the Middle-earth cultures to which they relate. Shore began his work on the music for The Fellowship of the Ring in late 2000 and recorded the first pieces of music (the Moria sequence) in spring of 2001. Additional music for the extended DVD version was recorded in March 2002. A similar pattern was followed for The Two Towers and The Return of the King, with the final sessions taking place in Watford on March 20, 2004.

The music was performed primarily by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Voices, with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra contributing some of the early Moria music. A wide variety of instrumental and vocal soloists contributed to the scores as well.

The scores for The Fellowship of the Ring and The Return of the King won Academy Awards in 2002 and 2004. The latter film also won an Oscar statuette for Best Song, as well as the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score and Best Original Song. Shore’s music for The Lord of the Rings has become the most successful composition of his career, and one of the most popular motion picture scores in history.
